Saturday April 30, 2011

Gold bars, cash, precious stones, paintings, etc.

The book "The museum disappeared" (Hector Feliciano), on the looting of works of art by the Nazi regime in occupied countries, shows pictures of the discovery of the largest Nazi treasure by Allied troops, in a mine Potassium to 800 feet deep near the town of Merkers, southwest of Berlin.

The mine known as Kaiseroda had 50 km of tunnels through five innings, and was detected in 1945 when American soldiers who controlled the town of Merkers, heard comments about the site surprised and rumors secret treasure by the people.

Two days later, two officers attended the scene of the army to go down an elevator about 700 meters from the mine. At the site, found what would probably be the richest deposit of the moment in various tunnels and caves found among other things, a thousand million marks in 550 bags, 8,527 gold bars, gold coins French, Swiss and U.S., suitcases with diamonds, pearls and other gemstones stolen from victims of concentration camps, including some bags of gold crowns.

The greatest treasure of the Nazis, stored in one place, reached according to estimates, over 90 percent of the reserves of the fallen regime, and was hidden by order of Dr. Fung, then president of the Reichsbank ostentatious. It is estimated that the train service in treasury size required a minimum of thirteen wagons.

addition to the money and gold, the place turned out to be one of the greatest repositories of art works confiscated by the Nazis, including 15 paintings from German museums and important books. The picture shows the work Edouard Manet, titled "Wintergarden", observed by American soldiers while holding it precariously on the cars of the mine:

goods and artefacts recovered were carefully removed and transported more than ten trucks to the headquarters of the Reichsbank Frankfurt, for further sorting and restitution. Although to this day, many works of art and wealth confiscated by the Nazis are still missing, finding Merkers mine is the biggest money and material reparation for postwar treasures ..
